Throughout time and cultures all over the world, way before “art” was a thing, humans have endowed objects with symbols and images which gave them supernatural protection or have communicated some sort of psych power. Humans make shit up. It’s what we do. And it will likely never stop.

EBK Gallery is very excited to exhibit the painted (signed) helmets by Tim Wengertsman aka Tim Tanker.

Back in 2015, Tim Wengertsman created a spectacular painting in the gallery titled “The Last Supper in Hartford” (link here). The “Punk Guernica” of punk art culture. Up now is the latest show of his…painted motorcycle helmets.

If one is familiar with the artist’s work they will quickly see that these objects are still filled with personal icons, mythical, historical and religious references. Altered, filtered, drawn and painted. For Tim, painting on a helmet is akin to the world of tattoo art which he is very familiar with. A language of visual territory an artist lays claim to, and declares ownership of, by marking their own bodies.

It’s interesting to note that painting over a curved or spherical surface (as in a motorcycle helmet), unlike the planar surface (a canvas or whatever), leaves a viewer with an incomplete experience until they discover the other side for themselves.

This exhibit contains an irony, or somewhat of a touch of dark humor here in that these objects, these helmets, are made to protect someone’s precious head from being destroyed; but now?… it’s the art that protects these “precious” helmets from being destroyed or discarded.

Below are a series of images of each helmet exhibited. Hopefully, your browser or device will also be able to load the attending 360 rotating views of each helmet. They’re really quite fun to use to get a full experience of the whole image.
