“The amusement park is the landscape of the modern American condition, where happiness is monetary, and spirituality is the defiance of our physical limitations. Translating the chaotic atmosphere of an amusement park into a painting has inspired me for years. My work explores this new frontier of American culture, where the beauty of the natural world is denied in favor of an artificial Utopia. Yet even Utopia is flawed, and these environments of attempted perfection are at constant conflict with the surrounding human, natural condition. The duality of artificial construction and natural environment, of nauseating movement and quiet contemplation. I explore these commonplace environments as avatars of the social, economic, and spiritual conflicts within American culture. I’ve discovered a veiled loneliness a midst an environment of utter chaos, horrible music, angry mobs, and fried dough. Whereas once I predominately focused on the physical momentum within the painting, like a thrill junkie, I now find myself discovering the more sensitive imagery of the human condition. In a carnival environment, all of our senses are challenged to act, all at once. My work examines our natural reaction to cope.” – T. C. P.
