Marking Time

“I have created a way of art making that combines my interests in art, nature and science. The outdoor environment provides the impetus for the direction of my work. My focus shifts as new visual information presents itself to me. Observed changes in atmosphere, cloud formations, and shifts in light and color inform my work. I follow the seasons and cycles of the year. I call this work The Weather Project.

For two years I explored the subtle transitions between night and day, specifically the hours of twilight, dawn, and sunrise. Since then my focus has been in that in-between space where horizon and sky meet, over land and over sea. I’ve observed shifting light and color; sun and clouds; mist and fog. Recently, I’ve been working with night sky.

We artists do not live and create in a vacuum; we are visual creatures and soak up everything we see. All that has come before informs us in some way; we accept, reject, transform or (attempt to) transcend in the search for our own authentic vision. The work of both photographers and painters have influenced my work and my way of seeing and thinking. Photographic influences include Muybridge’s motion studies, Stieglitz’s Equivalents series, and the landscapes of Ansell Adams.  Monet’s haystacks, Constable’s cloud studies, O’Keefe’s strong, simple forms, and the seriality and conceptual nature of LeWitt are among the other influences that inform my work. I have a strong affinity for the work and writings of Robert Motherwell; the deceptive simplicity of Mark Rothko; the philosophy and process of Gerhard Richter.”  – S.S.
