“I paint what I see because, I see it’s there. It’s all right there, and there’s always a story to be found in a scene. I paint crowded places and dense spaces. Urban and beach mostly. I like a nice complicated mess…to me it becomes oddly serene and peaceful. I’m pretty good at starting with what seems to be chaos and then finding visual connections and balance and in the end, a perfect calm.
Composition is like breathing to me…I just get it usually straight away. Whenever I can, I paint ‘en plein air’…it teaches me to see color and to see value accurately and quickly. I like to do a small version of larger paintings first to get to know the scene and make sure it’s good. I’ll know right away if it’s going to be good. It’s exciting. Although, until a painting is finished, it’s upsetting to see it. It takes time and I trust that it will be ok in the end. On rare occasions it’s not and it’s so depressing but…that never lasts for long because other paintings are waiting to be started.” – R.P.L.
