“I want to show you the pictures in my head. The daydreams I have. My wandering thoughts, fears, interests, obsessions. These images are my attempt to bring them to life.
These photographs and constructions consist of common artifacts from everyday life which have been rearranged, reassembled, and repurposed into various forms, patterns and illustrations. The images aim to examine the distance between my thoughts and the materials around me that inspire those fixations. A roll of blue painters tape in on a shelf becomes a distant and quiet view of the sea. A memory of a memory slowly dissolves and recedes like a photograph within a photograph within a photograph. This work is about the creating order where randomness is expected and hints that the minutiae all around us is capable of communicating much larger ideas.” K.V.A.

I want to be the first person to get a “Van Aelst Lens” when they become available!
I’ll pay good money for one of those. To see the world through that…wow. Can you imagine, everywhere and anywhere you look, strange, hilarious, dark and wonderful ideas would just fill your head all day. When one views the artwork of Kevin Van Aelst everything is so, so, obvious. Of course it is. But until he photographed it, you would never know it could exist. There’s definitely that magic of “I can’t wait to see what happens next” when following this artist. –E.B.K.
