Barbara Hocker has over two decades of experience creating and exhibiting work in New England including shows and projects in Hartford, New Haven, Newport, and Boston. She has work in several corporate and private collections, most recently the permanent collection of The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan. She holds a degree from Syracuse University’s College of Visual & Performing Arts and attended Cranbrook Academy of Arts. Barbara lives in Coventry, CT and maintains a studio in the Arbor Arts Center in Hartford. She has been practicing Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Zen Yoga for over 20 years. Barbara received an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Greater Hartford Arts Council in 2008. In 2013 Barbara was awarded a Creation of New Work Initiative Grant from the Edward C. and Ann T. Roberts Foundation, Inc. to create a new body of work culminating in a solo exhibition in the summer of 2014

“Travelogue” is an on-going practice of photography as a “Zen Art”, shooting from a moving car without looking through the viewfinder to emphasize the attempt to escape the rational mind and to capture shots from the place of “No Mind”. When driving the car the practice of not choosing anything other than where to point the camera is enforced necessarily by concerns for safety. Of course, most of the images captured this way are within the margin areas of visibility or legibility. I often choose to enhance the marginality of the images by using single glass or plastic optics, as well as an altered infrared camera. Serendipity provides some images that resonate for me, and these are the images I choose to print. I am not particularly interested in the straight narrative documentation of any of these usually shot trips in the car and so I don’t keep the images in a particular order, but instead try to create more poetic groupings of images for exhibition. I print the images on watercolor paper and rice paper and layer them in encaustic and beeswax on panels.
