“My practice is driven by curiosity. These paintings are experiments, and I want them to be simultaneously vast and intimate – equally fleeting and precious.. They are a physical manifestation of me exploring my experiences – figuring out how I exist in space. I visually feel my way through the space of them. I touch them and feel their surfaces while I work on them. I consider every part of them with both my eyes and fingers. I treat my physical studio in the same way – repainting, cleaning, and rearranging so that I become familiar with every inch and corner of my surroundings. I use the paintings to ask questions about existence and learn about how I relate to everything around me. They function as both the result of asking questions and the impetus for asking more questions. I invite the viewer to inhabit them, engage with the questions I have asked, and come away with their own questions about their space. When I start a painting, I do not know where it will go. A painting is finished when both the familiar and the undiscovered resonate.”   M.B.

Mark Brosseau

Equally drawn to color, science, math, and emotion, Mark discovered art by way of chemistry and architecture. After graduating from high school in Lyndon, VT, where he was born in 1976, he entered Dartmouth College with the intention of pursuing studies in chemistry. His interest soon shifted to architecture, a curriculum that required a drawing class. That drawing class changed not only his college major but also his life, introducing him to the world of creative exploration that fuels his passion and intellectual curiosity today. Mark graduated with honors from Dartmouth in 1998 with a BA in Studio Art, and then earned an MFA in Painting from the University of Pennsylvania in 2001. He followed that with a year of painting and printmaking in Iceland as a Fulbright Scholar. He has had ten solo exhibitions spread out between Vermont, Philadelphia, and Iceland. His work has been featured in numerous publications, including New American Paintings (2003), and group exhibitions (among them, Art of the State 2007 and 2008 at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg, Pattern Disruptive at Hopkinson House Gallery in Camden, NJ, Young Talent at the Washington Art Association in Washington Depot, CT, Philadelphia Painters at The Painting Center in New York, NY, Recent Acquisitions at United States State Department in Washington, DC, Color: Imagined and Observed at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, Painting Now at Southwest University of Visual Arts in Tuscon, AZ, the Dartmouth Alumni in the Arts Biennial at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, and Nor’Easter at the New Britain Museum of American Art in New Britain, CT). Mark currently lives with his wife, writer Jenny Lentz, and two dogs in New Jersey just outside of Philadelphia. He recently joined the collective Tiger Strikes Asteroid where he is serving as co-director, and is painting full-time.
