Invisible Monster

“Invisible monster won’t roar. Invisible monster won’t hide. Invisible monster won’t sneak. Invisible monster is patient. Invisible monster is flow. Invisible monster comes to you. Invisible monster goes inside of you and stays. Invisible monster interacts with your body without noticing you.
Oppenheimer was so naïve and romanticized himself when he quoted Bhagavad-Gita “I am become death, the shatterer of worlds.”
It seemed almost euphoric. Terror has come back occasionally since then, but also what has come back is amnesia.
The monster will reach you. We just don’t know when.” – H. F.

The artist Hirokazu Fukawa (or Hiro) has primarily been a conceptual and installation artist throughout his career. The drawings on exhibit in the gallery are, in effect, the topography of Invisible, destructive and unforgiving powerful forces his country of origin is all too familiar with, and all mankind for that matter. Just the words “invisible monster” evokes a child’s fear of something overwhelming and unstoppable.
For the artist, the Fukashima disaster has reinforced the idea and the reality that the plume of radioactive space which began and grew from the devastating tsunami was and is the very real invisible monster. -ebk
